Why do so many redesigns lose traffic?
Most redesigns lose traffic because the designer plans the look, not the URLs, content and redirects Google already trusts. The new site goes live, it looks better than ever, and within a few weeks the phone gets quieter.
Here's what usually happened. Old pages were deleted or renamed without redirects. Service pages were merged into one pretty "What We Do" page. Copy got shorter because it "looked cleaner." Each of those choices threw away something Google was using to rank you.
Fixing it after launch is slow and expensive, and some of that lost ground takes months to win back. The cheapest time to protect your rankings is before the first mockup.
What should you check before any redesign goes live?
Run this checklist with whoever builds your site, even if it isn't us. Each item protects rankings or leads you already have.
- Export every current URL from your sitemap and Search Console before work starts.
- List your top pages by traffic and leads. These pages need to keep their topic, depth and URL, or get a one-to-one redirect.
- Build a redirect map that sends every old URL to its closest new match. Never send them all to the homepage.
- Keep the words that rank. Shorter is not always better. Rewrite for clarity, but don't strip out the content that answers buyer questions.
- Carry over titles, headings and schema (code that describes your business to search engines) on key pages.
- Test on a staging site for speed, mobile layout, forms and tracking before launch.
- Submit the new sitemap and watch Search Console daily for the first two weeks, then weekly for three months.
A mistake to avoid: launching on a Friday afternoon. If something breaks, you want your team available the next morning, not on Monday.
What's included in an MRB web design project?
SEO site plan
Keyword research mapped to a page structure before design starts, so every page has a job and a search term to earn.
Ranking protection for redesigns
URL inventory, redirect map, content carryover and post-launch monitoring, so you keep what you've already earned.
Copy that sells
Page copy written in plain language for your buyers, with room for the details Google and AI search tools look for.
Conversion-focused design
Clear calls to action, trust signals and short forms placed where visitors decide, so more visitors become leads or buyers.
Speed built in
Light themes, compressed images and only the apps or plugins you need, so the site is fast on phones from day one.
Built on the platform that fits you
We build on and work with WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento, Joomla, Wix, Squarespace and similar builders, Elementor and other theme builders, and custom sites. We recommend the platform that fits your business and your team, not the one we prefer to bill for.
Technical foundations
Sitemaps, schema, analytics, Search Console and Bing setup done correctly at launch.

What happens when a site is built with SEO from the start?
A public adjuster came to us with a brand-new website and no search history. We handled everything: strategy, the site, content, technical setup and links. With search planned into the site's structure from the start, we ranked 57 pages to #1 in three weeks.
New sites usually take months to gain any traction. That result shows what a clear structure can do when search is part of the plan from the first page. See more results.

How does a web design project with MRB work?
1. Free audit
We review your current site, rankings and top pages so we know what must be protected.
2. Strategy (week 1–2)
Keyword mapping, sitemap, page plan and platform choice. For redesigns, we build the URL and redirect inventory here.
3. Design and build (month 1–3)
Wireframes, design, copy and build on a staging site, followed by testing. Timing depends on site size.
4. Launch, monitoring and growth
Redirects go live, Search Console is watched closely, and we report on rankings and leads. Many clients continue with an SEO plan after launch.
How much does SEO web design cost?
Web design is quoted per project, not sold as a monthly plan, because a 10-page service site and a 2,000-product store are very different jobs. What changes the price: number of pages or products, platform, custom features, copywriting needs and whether we're migrating an existing site. You'll get a fixed written quote after the audit. Ongoing SEO plans start at $950/month. See SEO pricing.
Who designs and builds your site?
Brian Vastola, our founder, plans the SEO structure himself using 25 years of hands-on experience. Our senior team of five handles design, build and copy. The same people who plan your rankings are in the room while your site is designed, so search isn't bolted on at the end.
What should you expect after launch?
- Weeks 1–2: Google recrawls the new site. Small ranking swings are normal.
- Weeks 2–6: Rankings settle if redirects and content were carried over well. Conversion gains from better design often show up first.
- Months 2–6: New pages built for new keywords start ranking.
A redesign done right should hold rankings and lift leads. It should not cause a lasting traffic drop. We can't guarantee rankings, but we can remove the usual reasons sites lose them.
Will a website redesign hurt my SEO?
It doesn't have to. Redesigns lose rankings when URLs change without redirects, content gets cut or technical settings are missed. We inventory every URL, map redirects, carry over ranking content and watch Search Console after launch. Short ranking swings in the first couple of weeks are normal.
How much does a new website cost?
Every project is quoted after a free audit because size and scope vary a lot. Factors include number of pages or products, platform, copywriting, custom features and migration work. You'll get a fixed written quote before anything starts. Ongoing SEO plans start at $950/month if you want growth support after launch.
How long does it take to build a website?
Most small business sites take 1 to 3 months from strategy to launch. Larger stores and migrations take longer. The biggest variable is usually content: having photos, service details and approvals ready speeds everything up.
Which platform should I choose: Wix, Shopify or WordPress?
Wix suits service businesses that want to make simple edits themselves. Shopify suits stores that want reliable checkout without managing hosting. WordPress suits businesses that need custom features or lots of content. We also build on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, Joomla, Squarespace and similar builders, Elementor and custom sites. We recommend based on your goals and who will maintain the site.
Can you redesign my site without changing platforms?
Yes, and it's often the safer choice. Keeping your platform reduces migration risk and lets us focus on structure, speed and conversions. We only recommend switching when your current platform blocks something important.
Do you write the website copy?
Yes. We write copy built around what your buyers search and ask, in plain language. You review everything before launch. If you prefer to write your own, we'll give you a page-by-page brief and edit for SEO.
What happens after the site launches?
We monitor rankings, indexing and forms closely for the first weeks. Many clients then move to a monthly SEO plan so the new site keeps growing. You own your site and content either way.
Is a new site better than fixing the old one?
Not always. If your site is fast, editable and well structured, targeted fixes and conversion work often beat a rebuild. Our free audit will tell you honestly which path makes sense.
