What is an AI visibility checker?
An AI visibility checker tests whether AI search tools, such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI features, can reach your website, understand what your business is, and pull clear answers from your pages. It looks at the technical signals those tools rely on and gives you a score with specific fixes.
This matters because more people now ask an AI assistant for a recommendation instead of scrolling through ten blue links. If the AI cannot read your site, or cannot tell what you do and where, it will mention someone else. Optimizing for these tools is often called GEO, short for generative engine optimization.
What does the AI visibility checker look at?
It runs seven checks on the page you enter and on your site's robots.txt file:
- AI search crawler access. Whether your robots.txt lets in the bots that power AI search answers: OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), ChatGPT-User (pages ChatGPT visits for a user), PerplexityBot, and Claude-SearchBot.
- AI training crawler settings. Whether you allow or block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended. These control whether your content can be used to train AI models. This is a business choice, so it is scored lightly.
- Structured data. Which schema.org types we find on the page. Structured data is code that labels your content (business, product, FAQ, article) so machines do not have to guess.
- Business identity schema. How complete your Organization or LocalBusiness markup is: name, website, logo, phone, address, social profiles, and more.
- Answer-first content. Whether headings are phrased as questions or clear statements, and whether the text right under them answers directly. AI tools quote pages that answer cleanly.
- Title, H1, and meta description. Whether the basics exist and describe the page clearly.
- llms.txt and HTTPS. Whether you have an llms.txt file (a newer, optional Markdown file that summarizes your site for AI tools) and whether the site loads securely.
Why would AI tools ignore my website?
The most common reason is simple: the site blocks them without the owner knowing. Some security plugins, firewall settings, and copied robots.txt templates block AI bots by default. If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, OpenAI says your pages will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
The second most common reason is that the site never clearly says who the business is. A human can figure out from your photos and footer that you are a roofer in Raleigh. A machine does better with an Organization or LocalBusiness schema block that states it outright, plus consistent details across the web.
The third reason is content shape. AI assistants build answers from passages. A page with a heading like "How much does a roof replacement cost in Raleigh?" followed by a two-sentence direct answer is much easier to quote than a page that buries the answer in paragraph six.
One important note: blocking training bots is not the same as blocking search bots. You can tell GPTBot and Google-Extended "no" and still let OAI-SearchBot in. Google states that Google-Extended does not affect your inclusion in Google Search. That is why we score training settings lightly and simply explain your choice.
What should I do with my GEO readiness score?
Start with the checks marked Fail that carry the most points. In most cases, that order is:
- Unblock AI search crawlers. This is usually a five-minute edit to robots.txt, and nothing else helps until it is done.
- Add or complete your Organization or LocalBusiness schema. On Wix, Shopify, and WordPress, this can often be done with built-in settings or a plugin. Fill in every field we list as missing.
- Rewrite your top headings as questions. Pick the five questions customers ask most. Make each one an H2 and answer it in the first 40 to 60 words beneath it.
- Fix your title, H1, and meta description so each one names what you do and, for local businesses, where.
- Add an llms.txt file if you want to. It is low effort and low risk, but it is a proposal, not a standard, so do not expect it to change results on its own.
Then re-run the checker to confirm each fix.
Keep in mind what this tool cannot measure. It does not ask ChatGPT or Gemini what they actually say about you, and it cannot see your reviews, your mentions on other sites, or how well-known your brand is. Those off-site signals often decide who gets recommended. Our free audit covers them.
What is a GEO readiness score?
A GEO readiness score is a 0 to 100 rating of how well a page is set up to be found, understood, and quoted by AI search tools. It weighs crawler access, structured data, business identity markup, answer-first content, page basics, llms.txt, and HTTPS. Higher scores mean fewer technical barriers, not guaranteed mentions.
Does blocking GPTBot keep me out of ChatGPT?
Not by itself. OpenAI uses GPTBot for model training and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. According to OpenAI, blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search, but blocking OAI-SearchBot does. Many businesses choose to block training bots and allow search bots. The checker shows both settings separately.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No, but it does not hurt. llms.txt is a proposed format, first published in 2024, for a short Markdown summary of your site aimed at AI tools. Adoption by major AI search engines is not confirmed, so we give it only 5 of 100 points. Fix crawler access and schema first.
Will a perfect score get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?
No tool can promise that. A high score removes the technical reasons AI tools might skip you. Whether you are recommended also depends on your reputation, reviews, mentions on other trusted sites, and how well your content answers real questions. Our GEO services work on those off-site signals too.
How is this different from a normal SEO check?
A normal SEO check focuses on ranking in Google's regular results: speed, titles, links, and technical health. This checker focuses on what AI answer engines need: bot access, machine-readable business details, and content shaped as clear answers. You need both. Try our SEO Audit Grader for the classic checks.
How often should I run it?
Run it after any site change, plugin update, platform migration, or new firewall or security setting, since those often change robots.txt or remove schema without warning. Otherwise, once a quarter is enough. It is free, so re-check whenever you are unsure.
