Salon SEO Case Study: #1 in 4 Months and Seven Years at the Top for Maritza's Beauty Salon in Raleigh

Maritza's Beauty Salon started with an outdated website and no SEO plan. The salon reached #1 in 4 months. Seven years later it still holds the top spot, and Maritza, the owner, grew enough to open a second location.

Project snapshot

  • Client: Maritza's Beauty Salon, a Dominican hair salon
  • Industry: Beauty and hair care
  • Location: Raleigh, North Carolina
  • Services: Web design, local SEO, Google Business Profile, on-page SEO, content, link building
  • Timeframe: Seven-year engagement
  • Headline results: #1 in local search in 4 months, held for seven years. Owner Maritza opened a second location.

Where was the salon when we started?

Maritza's Beauty Salon had loyal clients and real skill. What it did not have was a way for new clients to find it online.

The website ran on WordPress but had not been kept up. It looked dated, was hard to use on a phone, and did little to show off the salon's work. There was almost no traffic. There was also no analytics tracking, so nobody could tell how many people visited or what they did.

There was no SEO plan at all. Raleigh has plenty of salons, and when someone nearby searched for the services Maritza's offers, the salon was not showing up. Busy salons that rely only on word of mouth often feel fine until a slow season hits. By then, competitors who show up first on Google have already won those new clients.

What did we do to get a local salon to the top?

We treated this as a long-term partnership, not a one-time project. The work happened in three stages.

Stage 1: Rebuild the foundation

  • New website. We rebuilt the site with a modern design and high-quality photos that show the salon's real work.
  • Clear service content. Each service was described in plain language, along with what makes the salon different.
  • Mobile first. The new site worked smoothly on phones, which is where most people search for a salon.
  • Tracking. We set up analytics so we could measure what was working.

Stage 2: Win local search

  • Google Business Profile. We fully optimized the salon's Google Business Profile, the listing that shows up in Google Maps and local results. (Google used to call it Google My Business.)
  • Yelp and directories. We updated the salon's Yelp page and business directory listings.
  • NAP consistency. We made sure the salon's name, address, and phone number (NAP) matched everywhere online, which helps Google trust the listing.
  • Competitor research. We studied the top 10 competing salons, including where their backlinks came from, to see what it would take to beat them.

Stage 3: Keep growing, year after year

  • On-page SEO. We kept page titles, headings, keywords, and site speed in good shape as search changed.
  • Blog content. We wrote posts aimed at searches from people ready to book.
  • Link building. We earned links through guest posts, local business directories, and partnerships.

The key word is "kept." Local rankings are not a trophy you win once. Competitors open, Google updates its systems, and new review sites appear. We stayed on it for seven years.

Why does this kind of work matter for a salon?

The three stages above are what we did for Maritza's. Here is why each kind of work matters for almost any salon or local shop.

  • Photos and a phone-friendly site: People choose a salon with their eyes, and most of them look on a phone. If your work is hard to see on a small screen, they move on.
  • Google Business Profile: For a search like "hair salon near me," Google usually shows a map with a few businesses before any website. Your profile is what Google uses to decide if you are one of them.
  • Matching listings: When your name, address and phone are the same everywhere, Google can be sure each listing belongs to the same business.
  • Reviews: New clients read them before they book, and Google treats them as one sign of a trusted local business.
  • Steady upkeep: Fresh photos, posts and content show that the business is open, active and worth showing.

What results did seven years of SEO produce?

  • Top local rankings. The salon reached #1 in local search in 4 months and has held the top spot ever since.
  • Steady organic growth. Traffic from search kept growing over the life of the engagement.
  • A business that grew beyond one location. With a steady flow of new clients, Maritza, the owner, was able to open a second location.
  • A seven-year partnership. Few things say more about results than a client who stays for seven years.

What can other local businesses learn from Maritza's?

1. Your website is your foundation. A dated site that is hard to use on a phone loses clients before they ever call. Fix the foundation before you spend money on anything else.

2. Your Google Business Profile matters as much as your website. For local searches, the map listing is often the first thing people see. Fill out every field, choose the right categories, add real photos often, and reply to every review.

3. Local SEO rewards consistency over time. The salons that win are the ones that keep showing up: new photos, new reviews, fresh content, and clean listings, month after month. Treat it like maintaining your chairs and tools, not a one-time purchase.

What should you check for your own salon this week?

Each of these takes a few minutes, and none of them costs anything.

  • Search your main service plus your city on a phone and see where you land on the map
  • Open your website on a phone and try to call or book in two taps
  • Compare your name, address and phone on Google, Yelp, Facebook and your website
  • Check that your main Google Business Profile category fits your top service
  • Count the photos you have added in the last three months
  • Make sure every recent review has a reply

Value tip: pick one day each month as your profile day. Add three new photos of real work, reply to every new review, and check that your hours are right, including holidays. It takes about 20 minutes, and it is the upkeep most salons skip.

How do I get my salon to show up on Google Maps?

Start with your Google Business Profile. Claim it, fill out every field, choose the category that fits your main service, and add real photos. Then make sure your name, address and phone match on your website and other listings. Reviews and a solid website help Google trust the profile.

How long does local SEO take for a salon?

Most local businesses see Google Business Profile gains within 60 to 90 days and steadier growth in new clients in 4 to 6 months. Holding a top spot takes ongoing work, because competitors and Google keep changing. That is why the partnership in this case study ran for seven years.

Do I need a website if I have Instagram and a Google profile?

Yes. Social pages and your Google profile help people find you, but you do not control them. Your website is where you explain each service in your own words and make it easy to book or call. It also gives Google more to work with when it decides who to show.

How do I get more Google reviews for my salon?

Ask in person while the client is still happy with the result, then send a direct link to your review page by text. Make asking part of every visit. Reply to each review, good or bad. Never pay for reviews or offer discounts for them. That breaks Google's rules.

Is blogging worth it for a salon?

It can be, if each post answers a question people ask before they book, such as how a service works or how to care for it afterward. A few useful posts do more than many thin ones. Service pages and your Google Business Profile should come first.

How much does SEO cost for a salon?

Our plans start at $950/month for a single-location business. There are no long-term contracts. You can choose month-to-month or a 6-month agreement, with 30 days' notice to cancel. See all five plans on our pricing page.
