Shopify SEO Services That Turn Product Pages Into Organic Sales

Shopify makes it easy to sell. It does not make it easy to rank. We fix the Shopify-specific problems that keep your products off page one, so more of your revenue comes from search instead of ad spend.

Why do Shopify stores struggle to rank?

Shopify stores usually struggle because of how the platform builds URLs, how apps pile code onto every page, and how thin most product and collection pages are. None of that is your fault. It is how Shopify works out of the box.

Here's how it tends to play out. Your store grows. You add a review app, an upsell app, a bundle app, a pop-up, a size chart. Each one promised more sales. Some of them were uninstalled months ago and left code behind. Your theme now loads slowly on a phone, and your best collection page sits on page two.

So you lean on ads. Costs per click keep climbing, and the day you pause spending, sales drop. That's the real cost of weak organic search: you rent every customer instead of owning the traffic.

What are the most common Shopify SEO problems?

The big four are duplicate product URLs, app bloat, slow themes and incomplete product schema. Check your own store against this list before you talk to any agency.

1. Duplicate collection URLs. Many Shopify themes link to products through the collection, creating addresses like /collections/shoes/products/white-sneaker in addition to the main /products/white-sneaker. A product in five collections can have six URLs. Shopify adds a canonical tag pointing to the main one, but your internal links still send Google, and your link equity, to the copies. The fix is a theme code change so collection grids link straight to the main product URL.

2. Tag and filter pages. Collection tag pages and filtered views can create hundreds of near-identical pages. Since 2021, Shopify has let stores edit robots.txt through a theme template (robots.txt.liquid). Used carefully, it keeps crawlers focused on pages that matter. Used carelessly, it can block your whole store, so test every change.

3. App bloat. Each app can inject scripts on every page, even pages that never use it. Uninstalled apps often leave snippets in your theme files. We regularly find stores loading code for apps they stopped paying for a year ago.

4. Theme speed. Large hero videos, uncompressed images, several font families and sliders that nobody clicks all slow your store. Speed affects rankings a little and conversions a lot.

5. Incomplete product schema. Schema is code that tells Google a page is a product, with a price, stock status and reviews. Most themes include basic product schema, but it is often missing review ratings, variant prices or shipping and return details. Complete schema helps your products earn richer listings in search results.

Quick self-check: Open any collection page, right-click a product link and copy it. If the URL contains "/collections/" before "/products/", you have issue number one.

Which Shopify settings should you check yourself?

You can check most of these in an afternoon, with no code and no agency. Each one is a place where Shopify's defaults are fine for a new store and weak for a growing one.

  • Search engine listing: Every product, collection and page has a "Search engine listing" box at the bottom of its admin screen. If you never touched it, Shopify built the title and description for you from the product name and the first lines of the description. Rewrite the ones for your top collections first.
  • URL handles: The handle is the last part of the address. When you change one, Shopify offers to create a redirect from the old address. Leave that box ticked. Unticking it turns a ranking page into a dead link.
  • Variants: Colors and sizes live on one product page as variants, with addresses that end in ?variant= and point back to the main product. That keeps things tidy, but it means a single color cannot rank by itself. If shoppers search for a color by name, that color may deserve its own product page.
  • Collection descriptions: A collection with no description is a grid of pictures. Google has very little to read. Two or three useful paragraphs about how to choose, written for shoppers, are often the cheapest ranking gain in the store.
  • Vendor and type pages: Shopify creates automatic pages for every vendor and product type. They have no copy and you cannot edit them. Build a real collection for each brand that matters, and link to that collection from your menus.
  • Review app markup: Your theme prints product schema. Many review apps print their own as well. Two sets of product data on one page can conflict. Test a product URL in Google's Rich Results Test and look for duplicates or errors.
  • Sold-out products: Deleting a sold-out product deletes its rankings and its links. Keep the page live if the item is coming back. If it is gone for good, redirect it to the closest product or collection.

Value tip: Open Google Search Console, go to the Pages report and look at "Alternate page with proper canonical tag" and "Crawled, currently not indexed." On a Shopify store, a big number in the first usually points to collection-path product links. A big number in the second usually points to thin product or tag pages. Those two numbers tell you where to start, for free.

revenue in six months

What changed when a Shopify store fixed these problems?

One of our recent campaigns ran on Shopify and WordPress. The goal was simple: make organic search a real sales channel instead of a bonus.

The work followed the order on this page: clean up the technical leaks first, make collection and product pages worth ranking, then build content and links that point buyers to the right products.

Over six months, impressions grew 6x, clicks grew 5x and revenue doubled.

For a larger e-commerce example, see our e-commerce SEO case study, where a household appliance retailer grew monthly revenue from $300K to $540K.

How much does Shopify SEO cost?

Plans start at $950/month, but most Shopify stores selling nationwide fit our Growth plan at $3,600/month or Expand at $5,500/month. Stores in crowded categories may need Aggressive, starting at $9,700/month. Price depends on catalog size, competition and how much content and link building your market needs. See all plans.

Who works on your Shopify store?

Brian Vastola, our founder, has 25 years of hands-on SEO and personally leads every store audit. When your theme needs code changes, he joins the call with your developer so nothing gets lost. Our senior team of five handles content, schema and links. No junior account managers, no handoffs.

What Shopify SEO results can you expect, and when?

  • Month 1: Duplicate URL and speed fixes ship. Google starts recrawling cleaner pages.
  • Months 2–3: Impressions rise as collection and product pages get indexed and improve.
  • Months 3–6: Clicks and organic revenue grow. Our Shopify and WordPress campaign hit 5x clicks in this window.
  • Months 6–12: Gains compound as content and links build authority.

Highly competitive categories move slower. We'll tell you what is realistic after the audit, and we never guarantee rankings.

What does Shopify SEO look like month to month?

The first quarter is mostly repair. After that, the work turns into a steady routine. Knowing the routine helps you judge whether an agency is actually doing it.

Months 1 to 3: fix the leaks

We correct internal links so they point to one address per product, remove leftover app code, repair product schema and rewrite titles and descriptions for the collections that earn the most. Theme changes are made on a duplicate theme first, then published once they are checked. Your live store is never the test bench.

Month 4 onward: build and widen

  • New and rewritten collection and product copy, worked through in order of revenue
  • Buying guides and comparison pages in the Shopify blog, each linking to the right collection
  • Backlinks and brand mentions from sites your buyers already read
  • A check after every new app install or theme update, because both can undo earlier fixes
  • Seasonal collections prepared well ahead, and kept at the same address every year so they keep their history
  • A monthly report on organic revenue, clicks and rankings, with next month's plan

How does Shopify SEO connect to AI search?

Shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews what to buy. Those tools build their answers from pages they can read and from what other sites say about a brand. That makes AI visibility an extension of the same work, not a separate project.

  • Clear product facts: Size, materials, compatibility, what is in the box, shipping and returns, written as plain text on the page. An assistant cannot quote a detail that only appears inside an image.
  • Complete structured data: Price, stock status and review ratings in your product schema help machines read your catalog without guessing.
  • Answers to real questions: A short FAQ on key products and collections gives AI tools ready-made answers to "is this right for me?" questions.
  • Mentions beyond your store: Reviews, roundups and articles on other sites are what make an assistant confident enough to name your brand.

AI visibility work is part of every MRB plan. Read more about GEO, our AI search optimization service, or test your brand with the free AI visibility checker.

What should you ask a Shopify SEO agency before you hire one?

These questions work on any agency, including us. Good answers are specific. Vague answers are a warning.

  • How do you handle the /collections/ product links in my theme?
  • Will you edit my live theme, or work on a duplicate first?
  • Who writes the product and collection copy, and who approves it?
  • Which apps will you ask me to install, and what do they cost each month?
  • Do you report on organic revenue, or only on traffic and rankings?
  • What happens to my theme changes and content if I cancel?
  • Can I talk to the person who will do the work?

Be careful with any agency whose first step is installing an "SEO app." Apps can help with bulk edits and image compression. They do not fix link structure, thin collections or a slow theme, and each one adds more code to the store.

What affects cost and timeline on Shopify?

Four things move the number. Catalog size sets how many pages need real copy. Competition sets how many links and guides it takes to catch up. Theme condition matters, because a heavily customized theme or a long app history means more cleanup. And developer access matters: when we can work in a duplicate theme directly, fixes ship in days instead of waiting in a queue. Our plans have no long-term contract. You choose month-to-month or a 6-month agreement, and either can be canceled with 30 days' notice.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes. Shopify handles hosting, security, sitemaps and canonical tags well. Its weak spots are fixed URL folders like /products/ and /collections/, duplicate product URLs from theme links, and app code that slows pages. Each has a known fix, so Shopify stores can rank very well with the right setup.

How much do Shopify SEO services cost?

Plans start at $950/month. Most nationwide Shopify stores fit plans starting at $3,600 or $5,500 per month, depending on catalog size and competition. You get a written scope before you commit, so you know exactly what each month covers.

How long does Shopify SEO take?

Technical fixes often show results in 4 to 8 weeks. Real revenue gains usually take 3 to 6 months. Our Shopify and WordPress campaign reached 6x impressions, 5x clicks and doubled revenue in six months. Your timeline depends on competition and how much needs fixing.

Can I remove /products/ and /collections/ from Shopify URLs?

No. Shopify requires these folders and you cannot change them. That is fine. Google ranks Shopify URLs every day. What matters more is that your internal links point to one clean version of each product and that the handle after the folder is short and descriptive.

Do Shopify apps hurt SEO?

They can. Each app may load scripts on every page, which slows the store. Some apps leave code behind after you uninstall them. We audit your apps, remove leftovers and help you replace heavy apps with lighter options or built-in Shopify features.

Should I fix duplicate collection URLs if Shopify adds canonical tags?

Yes. A canonical tag is a hint, not a command. If your own links keep pointing to the collection version, you send Google mixed signals and spread link value across copies. Linking straight to the main product URL is a small theme change with a clear benefit.

Do you work with Shopify Plus stores?

Yes. Shopify Plus stores face the same SEO issues, often at a bigger scale, plus international setups that need correct language and region tags. We coordinate with your Plus agency or in-house developers.

Will you rewrite all my product descriptions?

Not all at once. We start with products and collections that drive the most revenue or have the best ranking potential. Then we work through the catalog each month based on your plan's content allowance.

Do I need an SEO app for my Shopify store?

Usually not. Shopify already lets you edit titles, descriptions, URL handles, redirects and alt text without an app. Apps can save time on bulk edits or image compression, but they do not fix duplicate product links, thin collection pages or slow theme code. Every app also adds scripts, so install only what you will use.

Will changing my Shopify theme hurt my rankings?

It can if it is rushed. A new theme can change headings, internal links, schema and page speed all at once. Before you publish, compare the old and new themes on your top collections and products. Check that titles, descriptions, product links and structured data carried over. Then watch Search Console for a few weeks after launch.
